ACCELERATE 2016

The call for entries for the British Council’s annual ACCELERATE leadership development programme is now open!

ACCELERATE is designed to provide Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islanders working within the creative industries with the skills and networks to generate, take up and excel in leadership positions.

The programme is aimed at Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people from across Australia who have at least five years’ experience in the creative industries and can demonstrate a bold vision for where they want to take their career and their community. On completion of the programme, participants form part of the national ACCELERATE alumni network, with access to continued support, training and international opportunities.

Since its inception in 2009, the programme has developed an alumni of 29 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts leaders across the creative disciplines, including music, theatre, fashion, design, literature, writing, visual arts and dance.

British Council Director Helen O’Neil says: “ACCELERATE is a unique opportunity that not only helps talented Indigenous future leaders reach the next stage in their careers but also creates pathways that allow others to follow in their footsteps. By drawing upon connections with the UK’s vibrant creative industries, it allows participants to develop valuable international networks in order to drive their own careers and flourish in leadership positions. We are working with UK trainers, expert in developing more diverse leadership groups, who have drawn on the rich cultural base of ACCELERATE alumni to ensure the programme is tailored to help participants meet the challenges and realise the opportunities before them.”

This year, ACCELERATE alumni will produce and drive an international First Nations creative leadership event. The event will be held during July 2016 on the lands of the Wodi Wodi people on Dharawal country at the University of Wollongong, and will see creative leadership and cultural practices of First National leaders shared, discussed and interrogated.

The 2016 successful ACCELERATE participants will be announced in Melbourne on Tuesday 16 August, 2016.

ACCELERATE 2016 is presented by the British Council and the Australia Council for the Arts in partnership with Arts NSW, Arts Queensland, Creative Victoria, Department of Culture and the Arts WA, with additional support from SBS NITV.
