‘A Verdant Heart’ is a group exhibition presented by King Street Gallery on William, which takes its title from the famous landscape designer Montague Russell Page; “Green Fingers are the extension of a verdant heart”.

The work in the exhibition reflects each artist’s experience of the garden in its many forms. Leo Robba explores the history and complex psychology behind the manicured garden space – a presentation of a family home to the outside world – in works such as Garden (2011). While Marc Standings paintings – one of which is titled floriguime (2012) – presents a more lyrical serenity of imagination and immersion. And Angela Valamanesh explores the natural world on the micro scale, rendering in clay the seemingly invisible material that surrounds us.

The exhibition install invites viewers to wander through the tactile, sculptural mounds of Sebastian Di Mauro and spoil in the garden of excess by photographer Robyn Stacey before examining Shona Wilson’s glass-housed miniature tree of Exhibit C (2012). Initiated by the Hawkesbury Regional Gallery, the exhibition offers insight into the varied ways in which artists have been, and continue to be, inspired by and respond to the garden.
