‘AD in Arcadia Ego’ continues Adrienne Doig’s interest in self-portraiture: “Using applique and embroidery on vintage French tapestries, I incorporate or superimpose my image into the scenery. Surrounded by Australian wildlife in a variety of stylised poses and leisure activities I create a more alluring and picturesque version of myself. Borrowing on images from the history of art (for example Casper David Friedrich and Édouard Manet), and my initials in the title, AD in Arcadia Ego plays with the meaning of the original latin phrase and emphasises my claim on this arcadian scene.”
