Stemming from improvisational performance, Sydney-based artist Agatha Gothe-Snape’s practice draws upon and records interpersonal and spatio-emotional exchanges around art and the contexts in which it is displayed. Her work employs a diverse range of media and methodologies, from prosaic performances to participatory workshops, PowerPoint slide shows to text and visual scores.

Part of Tokyo’s Mori Art Museum’s MAM Project 023, and supported by Australia Council for the Arts, Asialink, Arts NSW, Gothe-Snape’s current exhibition, ‘Oh Window’ presents a new installation and a series of performances triggered by MAM’s motto “Art + Life”. Curated by Haruko Kumakura, he interdisciplinary and multi-sensual exhibition, explores a series of tropes through a variety of delivery techniques. The artist interprets the “window” as an edge of two sites of the “art” inside an art museum and the “life” outside. As such, Gothe-Snape has interpreted the view of Tokyo from the Roppongi Hills Mori Tower venue to create a number of imaginary ‘windows’ in the windowless exhibition space. These imaginary windows have been made up of graphics, video footage and so on with motifs including dialogue between Gothe-Snape and Museum staff, and discoveries the artist has made around Roppongi Hills. The imaginary windows in the gallery space will serve as visual instructions and scores affecting the subsequent performances, which may result in incremental changes to the view from the “windows.” The performances will be staged over the duration of the exhibition, both in the gallery itself and in the surrounding Roppongi Hills area. Furthermore, Oh Window features a wide variety of collaborations with other artists. Most of the video works exhibited in the gallery space were produced in collaboration with Tsuda Michiko, a video artist known for her recent installation and performance pieces.
