Sydney based media artist, Ian Andrews, 53, has been awarded the 2014 Chippendale New World Art Prize, in its second year of a 10 year $100,000 arts initiative created by the Chippendale Creative Precinct (CCP).
This year, Ian Andrews will take his media installation work and theories to Spain, to partake in a $10,000 art residency at the Joya: arte + ecologia Residency in Spain for three months with all expenses paid.
Andrew’s winning work City of Light (2014), explores the visual and textual rhetoric of the urban utopia encapsulating the prizes 2014 theme of Utopia and ‘Creating a New World’. Embracing this New World, winning artist Ian Andrews, who lives in Marrickville, Sydney, invites his audience to reflect on our evolution towards the technologically facilitated world we live in today.
Andrews explains, “Utopias are then constructions of an ideal, or an ideal order, which has no real location except within the non-place of language.”
CCP Founder and Director of NG Art Gallery Nicky Ginsberg said, “Although Ian Andrews was a clear stand out, the judges were overwhelmed by the high calibre of deeply considered work and have highly commended the works from three participating artists; Cal Sinadinovic, collaborators Louis Pratt & Simon Rippingale and India Mark.”
“We are delighted to be able to offer the very talented Ian Andrews this life-changing opportunity to further his practice and gain experience working alongside other international artists in the Utopic region of Los Gazquez, Spain.”
The Chippendale New World Art Prize allows artists across a diverse range of mediums to apply for the chance to win this life changing residency.
Nicky Ginsberg stated “The arts residency at Joya: arte + ecologia will allow Andrews to soak up all of the cultural experiences and inspiration that Spain has to offer, as well as joining an international community of other artists. The Chippendale Creative Precinct is incredibly grateful to the benefactor of the prize, Dr. Stanley Quek, Chairman of Frasers Property Australia and CEO of Greencliff Realty for making this incredible prize a reality.”
