Birds: Flight paths in Australian Art

Petrina Hicks, Shenae and JadeTwo years in the making, this ground-breaking exhibition explores the science, symbolism, beauty and curiosity of birds and considers how Australian artists have incorporated birds in their work to explore stories of our environment, history and identity. Developed by Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery, ‘Birds’ comprises over 70 works including painting, photography, print-making, decorative arts, sculpture and installation by Australian artists John Lewin, Sydney Long, Hans Heysen, Albert Tucker, Arthur Boyd, Rover Thomas, Fiona Hall, Petrina Hicks, Ben Quilty, Kate Rohde, Christian Thompson, Louise Weaver, John Wolseley and many others.

‘Birds: Flight Paths in Australian art’ includes a specially commissioned interactive work by Juan Ford where visitors are invited to create a bird filled landscape using thousands of bird stickers provided by the artist. Visit the pigeon ‘club house’ and check out Kenny Pittock’s off-beat colouring book focusing on birds found on the Mornington Peninsula, famously home to an abundance of indigenous birds, wanderers and migratory birds. Pittock was an artist in resident at the Mornington Peninsula Shire’s Police Point Artist in Residence cottage during October, researching for this special project.
