Bruce Armstrong’s practice from the 1980s to today considers mythological forms, the flight of our imaginations and how the actors in both relate to the landscape. Using natural materials to convey the other worldliness of his creatures Armstrong now adds bronze figures to his flock of red gum and cypress tree characters. The survey exhibition comprises some of his major works as well as maquettes and lesser-known animal portraits painted on raw timber panels. NGV, Director Tony Ellwood sees the collection of more than 30 as testament to Armstrong’s works as “commanding and playful, contained yet expressive.”
