Since its inception in 1976, the Castlemaine State Festival has grown to become Australia’s flagship regional arts event, unique in scope and its diversity and impact on the social and cultural fabric of the Mount Alexander Shire and environs. This biennial ten-day multi-arts event encompasses visual arts, music, theatre, opera, and dance.

The 2017 visual arts program on from 17 to 26 March includes a curated exhibition program featuring workshops, conversations and celebratory openings with local talent and creatives from afar, exhibiting across 80 studios and galleries. Visitors will be led on a journey into unconventional, transformed environments and landscapes with art exhibitions, performances and installations. The program also explores Australia’s connection with the Philippines featuring film, visual and socio-political artworks, including a temporary sculpture by Filipino artist Leeroy New, transforming the façade of the Castlemaine Art Museum.
