Kandos is a small town located on the side of Coombermelon Mountain between Lithgow and Mudgee in Central West, NSW and is host to ‘Cementa17’ a celebration of contemporary art in Australia from 6 to 9 April.
The beautiful landscape of this region provides the ideal setting for local and urban artists to create and present works that focus on community, the town’s history and environment. Running across four days and nights this free festival will showcase performance, sound, cabaret, interactive and electronic arts, video, installation, photography, painting and ceramics by a collective of over 60 Indigenous and non-indigenous emerging and established artists.
Works will be on show in shopfronts and cafes, the local museum and nursery, and events will pop up in parks, garages, cars, backyards, the tennis courts, the golf club, community halls and churchyards. Three new satellite venues will extend the festival experience to the outskirts of the town at Ganguddy with PYT I Fairfield collaborating with Dauntless Movement Crew. At Birds Hut – the 19th century shepherd’s hut hosting ‘Correspondence of Imaginary Places’ by seven artists from the New York artist-run initiative ABC NoRio, installed by seven Australian artists who have an exchange exhibition in Manhattan. Kandos School of Cultural Adaptation presents The Hemp Initiative by Gilbert Grace at farming property ‘Marloo’.
Opening night includes a choral performance by A Galaxy of Suns – Michaela Gleave, Warren Armstrong & Amanda Cole who will present an ethereal experience of the cosmos as the sun sets and the stars rise over the horizon.
