The Mayor of Hobsons Bay, Cr Colleen Gates, welcomes you to ‘Art In Public Places‘ this April, “where art in Hobsons Bay moves beyond the walls of a gallery.”
With 150 western region artists and 40 events in over 80 venues, the local community can experience, explore and celebrate the arts through exhibitions, workshops, markets, installations, pop-ups and paste-ups in unique, unexpected places. This year there is plenty to see during business hours, but also a number of events and temporary art installations after dark.
Don’t miss #lightuplogan where Logan Reserve will be lit up with dynamic effects. In Altona a flight of colourful, ephemeral butterflies will swarm and cluster in various locations around Pier Street. Working with the McIntyre Drive Yarra Community Housing residents, hundreds of hand decorated butterflies will highlight the fragility of our environment and in particular the Altona Skipper Butterfly which is an endangered species. There will be street projections and installations in Hall Street, Newport developed with Williamstown High School students and the Projector Bike team. While Brooklyn will host a film projection presented by roving performance artist Michael Meneghetti across shop fronts in Eames Avenue during the evening.
Over 600 artists and businesses have been enabled by ‘Art In Public Places’ since its inception, and the program has grown with local trader associations, businesses, event producers, arts networks and groups uniting to present this culturally rich festival for the community. There really is something for everyone.
