The inaugural STABILO Design & Illustration Awards were held on Tuesday 19 July at Whitehouse Institute of Design’s Sydney-based Surry Hills campus.

Centred around the 150 year-old company’s theme, ‘Free Your True Colours’, the Awards celebrated the best in up-and-coming Australian design and illustration, with over 200 students from Whitehouse Institute of Design (Sydney and Melbourne), Raffles College of Design & Commerce (Sydney) and ISCD (Sydney) all participating. One hundred stunning submissions were displayed at the ceremony, each entry completed using solely STABILO products, including Carbothello pencils, Aquacolor pencils and the brand’s signature pens, the Pen 68 and Point 88.

HIgh Reed, Winner

An esteemed panel of guest judges presided over the Awards, with Claudia Chan Shaw, Janson Hews and Salvatore Zofrea tasked with the difficult task of picking four finalists. ‘Free Your True Colours’ encourages the user to express their ‘personality, dreams, ambition and potential via the medium of colour’ – a task which Hugh Reed, a student at Whitehouse Melbourne and the winner of the Awards – emphatically adhered to.

Reed’s stunning illustration, a look on androgyny, was a fitting winner. Aside from receiving a specially engraved STABILO gift set, Reed also won a trip for two to Paris, where he’ll be visiting the world-famous Le Louvre museum – home of the most famous illustration of them all, Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa – in January 2017.

Judge Claudia Chan Shaw, meanwhile, was effusive in her praise of Reed’s Tilda Swinton-inspired illustration, and spoke in length about how he captured the essence of the theme. “We [the judges] were immediately drawn to this piece because of its clever use of monochrome and pointillism, which posed the question – ‘is this image receding or emerging from the page?’. We finally agreed that it was emerging, with Hugh’s clever use of different blue shades resulting in a stunning piece of art”.

Works are being auctioned off for charity. All proceeds will go directly to The Australia New Zealand Gynaecological Oncology Group (ANZGOG), the lead group for gynaecological clinical trials in Australia and New Zealand – stabilo.auction-bid.org
