Gesture and the Hand: Later years of the Margaret Lawrence Australian Ceramics Collection

Previously one of the largest private collections of studio ceramics in Australia, the Margaret Lawrence Australian Ceramic Collection was bequeathed to the Victorian College of the Arts, University of Melbourne in 2004. The collection spans 100 years and is a unique record of ceramic practice in Australia.

Presented in this exhibition are pieces acquired by Margaret Lawrence, during the later years of collecting, including works by David Ray, Stephen Benwell, Deborah Halpern, Jane Sawyer, Pippin Drysdale, David Pottinger, Gail Nichols, Lynda Draper, Bern Emmerichs and others. The exhibition draws from the collection considering the gesture in art practice and evidence of the hand within objects.
