Guy Maestri: Black Gold

Having recently joined Jan Murphy Gallery’s stable of represented artists, ‘Black Gold’ is Maestri’s first solo exhibition in Queensland. The Sydney-based artist is known for his plein-air painting and the connection he has with landscape surrounding Broken Hill, Hill End and Wilcannia.

In developing work for this exhibition, Maestri spent time in and around Broken Hill exploring mining debris from yesteryear. It’s easy to gloss over the history of plein-air as a European tradition, born of gentle grasses and mild sunlight. Practiced in Australia, away from the slip of green coastline, plein-air demands rigor of vast dimensions.
