Dive in head first into an exploration of the self, societies and the spaces surrounding them through a vibrant and diverse range of images, snapped by a blend of national and international photographers for ‘Head On Photo Festival 2016’.
Since its launch in 2010, ‘Head On’ has become Australia’s leading photography festival. This year’s festival includes over 150 events, with over 50 curated exhibitions on display in galleries and other locations throughout Sydney.
Some festival highlights include Toby Burrows’ series, ‘Nothing to Lose’, an exploration and celebration of movement and self as he captures plus-sized performers mid dance. This exploration of deeper character is also carried in Anna Fawcus’ award-winning ‘MIXED EMOTION (M.E.)’. The stunning photo series exposes an inner self-portrait by highlighting the more personal aspects of the self, particularly those inherited from one’s upbringing.
Australian photographers accompanying Toby Burrows in this year’s festival include John Feely, Jon Franks, Claire Reynolds, Amy Crawley and Natalie McComas. Through their works, suburban and rural life in Australia and overseas can be observed. International photographers like Hiro Tanaka and Natan Dvir identify the life and vibrancy of New York City whilst Catherine Leutenegger captures her own ‘Kodak’ moments.
As well as exhibitions, the prestigious ‘Head On Photo Awards’ will take place, along with an assortment of world-renowned speakers, innovative workshops and community events, all showcasing the work from over 900 Australian and international photographers. The month long event is the Australian hub for photographic enthusiasts, professionals and collectors alike.
The Head On Portrait Prize, is one of Australia’s most critically acclaimed photographic portrait competitions and one of the flagship events of the annual Head On Photo Festival. For the announcement of the winners visit our news page.
