Hew Chee Fong: Don’t dive shallow in deep dark water

Hew Chee Fong is a Malaysian-Australian sculptor who creates large-scale public and smaller pieces with natural found materials, such as granite and petrified timber as a primary medium. Fong produces visible forms through a deep connection to material and process. ‘Don’t dive shallow in deep dark water’ represents the continuity of his practice over three decades, realising the often enduring processes involved and revealing the presence of intuition based on the concept of Tao.

Taoism, the philosophy of Chinese origin, proposes the idea of living in harmony with the universe, drawing on intuitive wisdom rather than rational knowledge. These works evoke an immediate sense of reflection and offer a moment of quiet contemplation.
