‘Impressions of Paris’ is a nod to the great contributions to French art made by three key figures: Honoré-Victorin Daumier, Edgar Degas and Henri de Toulouse- Lautrec. Each a generation apart, their caricatures and prints captured fleeting moments of Paris in the 19th century. Embracing motifs of modern French life, their drawings are humorous depictions of the ballet, racecourse, café-concert and the demimonde.
The exhibition presents over 150 prints, posters and drawings of French caricature. By viewing these three master draughts-men as a collective, recurring themes and styles appear, providing insight into the influences each artist inspired in the other.
