The Justin Art House Museum (JAHM) is an initiative of renowned Melbourne architect Charles Justin and his wife Leah – a house museum, designed to showcase their collection of over 240 works of contemporary art acquired over 20 years. “The collection has given us such pleasure over the years and we want to share that joy with other art lovers,” says Charles Justin.
JAHM is a perfect hybrid of architecture, art and domesticity. Transformed by Elisa Justin of Justin Architects, the former apartment block in Prahran now wears a distinctive triangulated façade and boasts an impressive gallery on the second level, leading to the Justin’s personal quarters on the third level. Traverse between levels via the illuminating stairwell – 39 steps of interactive coloured lighting created by designer Ilan El. Alternatively, you can take the lift where a vibrant digitised photographic stripe composition encompasses a whole wall, making each ride an immersive experience. The JAHM will host two exhibitions per year with viewings only available by pre-booked tours, personally guided by Charles and Leah.
“After we have viewed the exhibition we invite people to then come upstairs into our home to see how we live with our collection. Over coffee and cake we hope to strike up many great conversations about the exhibitions and art in general,” explains Charles.
JAHM’s inaugural exhibition ‘Divine Abstraction’ is currently on show, running until 19 June 2016. The exhibition features 18 works from some of Australia’s leading artists including Justin Andrews, Peter Daverington, Tim Maguire and Catherine Nelson.
