The coastal town of Lorne celebrates art and sculpture with over 100 artists creating projects dotted around town. The Biennale is split into three main event threads – Sculpture Trail, Small Sculpture and Scultpurescape – that are all free. The Sculpture Trail hosts 36 major sculptures along the coastline, Small Sculpture showcases works that are no larger than 30 x 30 x 30cm, while Sculpturescape allows viewers to watch 16 different artists work onsite, over two days, to create their project.
Some of the artists involved are: Mark Douglass, Josh Muir, Aaron Robinson Stéphane Guérin, Peter Lundberg, David Waters, Takahiko Sugawara, Jenny Crompton and others. Complimenting the sculptures are workshops, talks, forums and mini tours.
Curator Julie Collins says she’s excited to present the major project commissions. “I have selected three sculptors to create major projects within the ‘hero sites’ as I like to call them, the Pier, the Foreshore and the River/ Swing Bridge area,” says Collins. “All works have a night-time element, so are worth a return visit. The three projects are very different from each other, one tells a story of our history, the other creates a snapshot of nature in an industrial world and the other creates a zone where everything and anything is possible. Major Projects by Josh Muir, Mark Douglass and Aaron Robinson will join 35 other sculpture trail pieces from the pier to the Erskine River.”
