The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Nusantara (Museum MACAN) will be the first institution of its kind in Indonesia, providing public access to local and international modern and contemporary art.
Museum MACAN’s objectives are spearheaded by recently appointed Director, Aaron Seeto who hails from the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) in Brisbane, where he served as Curatorial Manager of Asian and Pacific Art. He was formerly Director of 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art in Sydney. Seeto asserts the importance of the Indonesia’s arts scene and need to foster an intercultural dialogue; “Indonesia has an important role to play in the development of a vibrant environment for art in Southeast Asia – to not only nurture understanding of its artists, but also to create viable networks between the region and the world.”
Co-curated by Charles Esche and Agung Hujatnika, the inaugural exhibition will bring together approximately 90 significant artworks from Asia, North America and Europe, drawn from the extensive private collection of Haryanto Adikosoemo, Museum MACAN’s Founder, as well as a series of contemporary installations and new commissions.
The museum’s grande apertura is one of the most anticipated events this year. Following delays in construction the opening has been pushed back to November 2017, coinciding with two of the region’s largest contemporary art exhibitions – the ‘Jakarta Biennale’ and ‘Biennale Jogja’. Interim, the public will be offered a sneak peek this March with the launch of ‘MACAN First Sight’, a series of pop-up weekend performances, lectures, workshops and guided tours, as well as access to an indoor sculpture garden with panoramic views of Jakarta’s skyline.
