The first major Australian solo exhibition by emerging pop artist and portrait painter Matt Dampney, is an exploration into the locations and the pioneers of the great outdoors. Dampney’s interpretation of these dreamlike places of tranquility and simplicity include graphic landscapes of shacks, hideaways, cabins and portraits of well-known adventurers like Yvon Chouinard of Patagonia, Ernest Hemingway and surf pioneer Nat Young.
The series of ‘weekenders’ painted on board in Dampney’s seemingly naive graphic style and bold confident palette, reference his love of shapes, colour and composition. Lashes of colour blocks reconfigure images of seeming normality into vessels of interest. The paintings amalgamate, and jump between pop and contemporary art.
