Australia’s prestigious Melbourne Art Foundation Awards for the Visual Arts will be celebrated at a lavish evening affair, held at the National Gallery of Victoria.
An initiative of the Melbourne Art Foundation (MAF), the Awards for the Visual Arts celebrate innovation and excellence in the Australian visual arts sector. A highlight of the Australian visual arts calendar, the biannual event recognises, at a national level, the outstanding contributions made by Australian artists and the art visionaries who support them.
Contributions to the Visual Arts sector are acknowledged through the following Award categories: Artist Award, Visionary Award and this year a newly introduced award category, the inaugural Young Artist Award. The Artist Award recognises the renowned achievement of an Australian Artist for a comprehensive body of work, with the Visionary Award acknowledging the exceptional dedication of individuals and their demonstrated commitment to progressing the status of contemporary Australian art nationally and beyond.
Previously in 2014 contemporary visual artist, Patricia Piccinini, was presented the prominent Artist Award for outstanding accomplishment in her eminent artwork and advertising legend Peter Clemenger and wife Joan deservingly received the Visionary Award for their ongoing philanthropic support of contemporary Australian art.
Chairperson of the Melbourne Art Foundation, Anna Pappas, is delighted to announce the newly created Young Artist Award category for the 2015 ceremony. A primary focus of the evening, the inaugural Young Artist Award was inspired by a strong need to assist young local artists in the infancy of their career. This new Award honours one young artist under 35 years and supports the next generation of artistic practice with financial assistance of up to $10,000 toward an international residency within the Asia-Pacific region.
The Melbourne Art Foundation Awards for the Visual Arts brings together the community to acknowledge and celebrate Australian talent and the vital contribution of such creativity to the industry. Nominations for the Awards are considered by a judging panel comprised of members of the Melbourne Art Foundation Board and Director, overseen by an independent body.
The Awards for the Visual Arts will be announced during a distinguished gala dinner featuring presentations, live performances and a series of keynote speeches by acclaimed figures in the visual arts. Honoured guests in attendance will include national private and corporate collectors, business leaders, federal and state government officials, visual arts industry leaders, curators, critics and national media.
