From 16 to 21 August, some of Melbourne’s best boutique art galleries come together to celebrate visual arts and showcase emerging and established contemporary artists.

FUSE (Saturday 20 August, 10.30am-2pm) is a special program of talks hosted by Flinders Lane Gallery covering a variety of topics – from the impact of supporting the arts within the larger framework, how to prepare a serious collection strategy, the dispelling of misinformation around Art for Super, and other avenues to explore for Art as Investment – facilitated by Catherine Asquith (Curator, Art Consultant and Advisor), Charles Justin (Collector, Architect and Founder of Justin Art House Museum), Arthur Roe (Managing Director Arthur Roe & Associates Pty Ltd and art collector for over 20 years) and Owen Craven (Curator, Urban Arts Project). ‘NotFair’ (16 to 21 August) will showcase some of Australia’s best and most interesting emerging, unrepresented and independent artists. ‘NotFair 2016’, titled Sign O’ the Times, will present a program of events including tours of Melbourne galleries and artists’ studios and a three-way speed-dating party to facilitate connections between artists’ and writers.

“The concept is simple,” says the organisation’s Chairman Paul Guest, “instead of confining emerging artists in miniscule booths for commercial galleries, NotFair is a large-scale art fair that is curated, and that furnishes an outlet for artists that are not represented.” Artists include Jasmine Targett, Steven Rhall, Anna Madeleine, Michael Candy, Natalie Ryan, Jason Wing and others.

‘SPRING1883’ (17 to 21 August) will transform the grand heritage Hotel Windsor in the heart of Melbourne into a national art event with a strong overseas presence during Melbourne’s Art Week. Recasting the traditional art fair model, ‘SPRING1883’ will showcase contemporary art by approx. 40 early, mid-career and senior contemporary artists from Australia, New Zealand and beyond presented in the ambience of the hotel’s old-world charm. Artworks in a range of mediums will be exhibited in guest rooms; hung on walls, arranged on beds, installed in bathrooms, and on furniture. 27 leading national and international commercial galleries will participate – ALASKA Projects, Daine Singer, Darren Knight Gallery, Fort Delta, GAGPROJECTS, Gallery9, General Store, Grey Noise, Hamish McKay Gallery, Hugo Michell Gallery, Jan Murphy Gallery, Kalli Rolfe Contemporary Art, KANSAS, Karen Woodbury Gallery, Michael Lett, Minerva, Murray White Room, Neon Parc, PAULNACHE, Robert Heald Gallery, Sarah Cottier Gallery, Sarah Scout Presents, Southard Reid, STATION, {Suite}, Sutton Gallery and Tolarno Galleries.

‘602’ (17 to 21 August) is a new art fair created by select Sydney and Melbourne art dealers, lead by Scott Livesey, along with the City of Melbourne, to revive a former 1955 electricity sub-station at 602 Little Bourke Street. Side stepping the traditional art fair model, ‘602’ will showcase more than 40 Australian and international contemporary artists in this re-purposed urban space. Charles Nodrum Gallery and Scott Livesey Galleries of Melbourne will join Sydney galleries Martin Browne Contemporary, Michael Reid Sydney + Berlin, Olsen Irwin, Watters Gallery and .M Contemporary to participate in the inaugural event. The collective of dealers will be presenting new artworks created specifically for the experience and focusing on presenting artists not regularly shown in Melbourne.

‘FLAIR Melbourne’ (18 to 21 August) will showcase a series of curated exhibitions, talks and experiences over four days at several venues across the top end of Flinders Lane. One of the unique exhibitions at FLAIR will be acclaimed photographer Robyn Stacey’s project, Are you experienced? Turning a hotel room at Sofitel Melbourne On Collins into a camera obscura, small groups of visitors will be invited to participate in this quite magical experience. The program has been curated by ARC ONE Gallery, Arts Project Australia Collins Place Pop-up (supported by NKN and Gandel Philanthropy), Craft, fortyfivedownstairs and Sofitel Melbourne on Collins and Global Art Projects.

‘MARS Gallery at The Melbourne Supper Club’ (17 to 21 August) presents an installation of several gallery artists, illuminating one of the city’s favorite, iconic venues – The Melbourne Supper Club – with a projection of video works, light works and stereoscopic photography in addition to a number of engaging cardboard sculptures. The exhibition will include works by Daniel Agdag, David Burrows, Stephanie Leigh, Diego Ramirez, Giles Ryder and Jud Wimhurst.

‘& art fair’ brings 25 of the city’s most unique sculptors to Melbourne’s CBD with a number of other art galleries to feature across the city showcasing works from emerging and established contemporary artists.  Curated by Julie Collins of djprojects, 12 galleries will be spread across laneways within sponsor Far East Consortium’s Upper West Side development, Watertank Way and Rose Lane, contributing to the precincts’ numerous ground floor retail offerings.
