Monique Auricchio: Dogs of war

The conflicting relationship of man’s dependency on, yet ultimate disregard for, the role of animals in warfare over the centuries is explored in this series of encaustic paintings by New South Wales artist Monique Auricchio.

‘Dogs of war’ is a thematic continuation of ‘Absurdities of War’, Auricchio’s previous exhibition which provided illustrative studies for this new body of work. They are abstract in their depiction of the contradictory way humans rely on animals to fulfil both combative and espionage roles man either cannot or will not fulfil themselves, and how these same animals are discarded once victory or defeat has been reached.
