‘No.1 Neighbour’, is a major exhibition at the Queensland Art Gallery celebrating 50 years of contemporary visual art in Papua New Guinea (PNG). The artists focus on their country’s independence in 1975, as well as PNG’s relationship with Australia and the ongoing creative connections between us. A showcase of sculpture, textiles, painting, photography, ceramics, printmaking and ‘bilas’ (ornamental masks) used in ‘sing-sing’, as well as music and dance performances. Australian-born Chimbu artist, Eric Bridgeman, has created a new multimedia installation, titled Kuman Pawa, which will highlight the exhibition.
QAGOMA Director, Chris Saines, says the exhibition promises to, “delight audiences with bold colour, towering sculptural forms, humour and hauntingly beautiful sounds.”
