100+ artists announced; live mural to be created onsite; public program to include tattoo artist collaboration plus food and art master-classes.
Presented by Saatchi Art, ‘The Other Art Fair’ is an Australia and UK’s exhibition targeted towards the new generation of art buyers. A place where you can meet and buy direct from the best emerging and undiscovered artists – carefully selected by a committee of art industry experts – with artworks offered for sale from as little as $100.
“‘The Other Art Fair’ is specifically designed to breakdown the many barriers to entry for both artist and collector by perfectly bridging the gap to make it easier and more to buy art. By purchasing art at the fair, visitors directly support emerging talent and contribute to growing the opportunities for undiscovered artists in Australia,” commented Fair Director, Laura Richardson.
Established in the UK, ‘The Other Art Fair’ has presented more than twelve pioneering editions in the past five years. The launch of the fair in Sydney in September 2015 cemented the fair on to a bustling international stage with thousands of art lovers welcomed through the doors of Central Park, Chippendale to view artwork by 80 handpicked exhibiting artists.
Celebrated for its unique and immersive visitor experience, ‘The Other Art Fair’s’ second Sydney edition will continue to delight and inspire visitors with appearances from a distinguished guest artist, interactive theatre performances, live music, a mouth-watering restaurant and bar area, and much more.
The United Kingdom’s largest artist-led contemporary art fair, ‘The Other Art Fair’ today announced a prestigious new partnership with the world’s leading online art gallery Saatchi Art, in advance of the fair’s return to Sydney for a second edition presented from 27 to 30 October, 2016. The partnership will see works presented by artists at this year’s Fair added to the Saatchi Art online gallery which features more than 500,000 works worldwide. More than 100 Australian artists have also been announced as selected to present work at ‘The Other Art Fair Sydney’, which will be held for the first time at Australia’s newest arts and cultural destination, COMMUNE in Waterloo.
As part of its partnership with ‘The Other Art Fair’, Saatchi Art will present Invest in Art 2016, a portfolio of 15 of the Australia’s most promising art graduate artists whose works will be available to discover and acquire for the first time at the Sydney fair.
“With a shared mission of identifying and supporting emerging artists from all over the world, Saatchi Art and ‘The Other Art Fair’ are natural partners,” said Rebecca Wilson, Chief Curator and Vice President of Art Advisory, Saatchi Art. “The alliance of these two brands sets a new precedent for the art world, with seamless integration between Saatchi Art’s online gallery and The Other Art Fair’s offline events, creating even more opportunity for artists and art lovers alike.”
This year’s ‘The Other Art Fair’ in Sydney will be the 15th edition and offers an expanded vision curated with the theme of “Making Art Fair” from newly appointed Fair Director Laura Richardson following its successful inaugural 2015 edition that attracted over 7,500 visitors over the four-day event. ‘The Other Art Fair’ will host over 40,000 art lovers across 4 international fairs (London, Bristol, Sydney and New York) in 2016 and will work with 420 artists.
More than 100 of Australia’s most talented emerging artists have been announced to take part in ‘The Other Art Fair Sydney’, enabling them to connect directly with collectors to sell their work. The line up of artists has been announced by a high profile local selection committee, which Richardson says ‘select artists based on their merit rather than experience, social status, gender, ethnicity or their financial position.’ The selection committee of contemporary art experts is comprised of Ben Quilty (artist), Roslyn Oxley (Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery), Amanda Love (art consultant) and Leif Podhajsky (Graphic artist).
Artists presenting at ‘The Other Art Fair 2016’ include: Chrysa Koukoura, Celeste Wrona, Mark Collis, Ben Hosking, Joe Helmore, Sarah Beetson, Timothy Jones, Bianca Beetson, Martine Vanderspuy, Chocolate Einstein, and Kirsten Jackson, representing a range of mediums including painting, resin, photography and illustration.
‘The Other Art Fair Sydney 2016’ will host Australian guest artist Sarah Contos from Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery. Sarah Contos will offer visitors the opportunity to purchase one of 500 limited edition signed printed artworks for around $100 created exclusively for the fair. Higher priced larger scale works by Sarah Contos will also be available to acquire from the Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery stand at the Fair.
Public Program Highlights
In a first for Australia, ‘The Other Art Fair’ will add another dynamic to the Fair’s diverse approach to artistic genre through an unexpected partnership with Sydney tattoo artist Rhys Gordon of Little Tokyo. Known for his traditional Japanese tattooing, Rhys Gordon will collaborate with guest artist US based Kozyndan to create tattoo works that challenge the traditional view of art, questioning permanence, value and ownership of contemporary art. ‘The Other Art Fair’ will run an exclusive competition welcoming the general public to apply for one of four artworks drawn by Kozyndan to be tattooed by Rhys on their body each day of the Fair.
In addition to the tattoo led art offering, Triumph & Disaster bring their art of barbering to the fair offering traditional men’s cut throat shaves and facials. On the opening night, a live mural will be installed by Chocolate Einstein at the fair’s location, Australia’s newest arts and cultural destination, COMMUNE in Sydney’s Waterloo.
In partnership with The School of Life, a major sponsor of ‘The Other Art Fair’ will offer fair visitors the opportunity to experience ‘The Point of Art’ guided tours which aim to provoke a rethinking of some crucial assumptions about what the experience of art is for. The Point of Art guided tours will seek to help its audience develop a deeper understanding of art and of themselves in equal measure. The tours are an intimate experience in which attendees will be guided through unique interpretations of selected pieces in ‘The Other Art Fair’, and asked to share insights and responses to the selection in conversation with other participants.
Just announced to the public program is the inclusion of workshops by Redfern based Work-shop who will offer Food and Art master-classes including Watercolour & Wine, Perfume Making and a Gin master class with Archie Rose. The Other Art Fair’s dynamic public program will include activities for kids ‘art for all the family’ and is presented in collaboration with Eckerlsey’s and Winsor & Newton.
Food and beverage options have been carefully curated to activate the COMMUNE space and just added to the local taste makers is a grazing table by Three Blue Ducks who will join Young Henrys returning to host ‘The Other Art Fair’ bar alongside Archie Rose and Urban Winery and coffee is in the expert hands of the team from Espresso Di Manfredi. For the sweet tooth, Black Pantry will be on site to provide handcrafted marshmallows and toasting stations to create your very own smores unlike any marshmallow you have tasted.
‘The Other Art Fair’ is presented in partnership with Major Partner, BresicWhitney who are running their own People’s Choice Award to acknowledge outstanding participating artists. Artists will be selected by the audience of The Other Art Fair who will have a chance to win their voted artwork and the winner of the People’s Choice Award will be awarded a cash prize to the value of $5000. The exclusive Hotel Partner, The Old Clare Hotel are offering discounted room rates for friends of ‘The Other Art Fair’ and the campaign’s design is led by Creative Director Anthony Donovan.
