‘Pause Fest 2015’ will transform Melbourne’s iconic Federation Square into a digital and innovation hub of groundbreaking screen content, multimedia art and thought-provoking conversation.
This year will mark one Australian premiere and one world premiere of two dazzling interactive installations commissioned and presented by Fed Square with Micro and Flow.
Micro is an interactive 3.5m2 installation of suspended globes from New York based new media artist Aaron Sherwood and performer, choreographer and visual artist, Kiori Kawai of Purring Tiger. Fed Square visitors are invited to walk into the installation and touch the globes, which represent particles. Each particle will reply with a different sound and light creating an immersive experience that represents how our mind affects particles, cells and ultimately the body itself.
Flow by Melbourne-based creative team, Ethno Tekh unearths a digital garden of 13 flower sculptures connected by streams of flowing light. This futuristic sculptural garden is accompanied by a surreal soundscape that has been constructed with field recordings of the Tasmanian forests and fused with digital glitch and granular synthesis techniques. Visitors are invited to enter the garden and ‘awaken’ its flowers by making gentle hand gestures that direct the flow of light through the structure. Each flower then adds another unique ‘voice’ to the lush soundscape.
From an expo on start-ups to an enchanting installation of 100 LIFX smart light bulbs to a talk fest from masters of media, design, activism, business and advertising, this year’s program brings together some of the world’s best digital projects and industry leaders to explore the Festival theme, pure – simple ideas that will change the world.
Since its humble beginnings as a series of films on Federation Square’s Big Screen, ‘Pause Fest’ has emerged as Australia’s premier digital festival. Now in its fifth year, it is a city-wide celebration of new media with Federation Square as its hub. ‘Pause Fest’ Director George Hedon harnessed the support from Federation Square’s Creative Program to springboard ‘Pause Fest’ into its current manifestation of international guests and large contingency of industry sponsors.
