‘The question is how Claudia Chaseling frames “the political” in her art, which is abstract, but has to do with something “beyond itself”’, writes Bojana Pejic in the opening essay of this substantial mediation on the artist’s work, motivations and affectivity. Divided in two, the beginning outlines complex political and art historical conceptual confluences in her work and then concludes with letters exchanged between her and fellow artist eX de Medici. The pair agree there are no politics, only economics in this world and discuss how Chaseling’s graphic novel ‘Murphy the Mutant’, that imagines a radioactively contaminated planet, relates to her spatial paintings. German born, Chaseling is now a PhD candidate at the ANU School of Art & Design.
