With over 650 items in the collection, grahame galleries + editions’ Centre for the Artist Book, has one of the country’s largest collections of artists’ books. Noreen Grahame says it has, “evolved from a small collection of artists’ books I had acquired in Europe before opening grahame galleries + editions in Brisbane in 1987.” After the gallery mounted two artists’ book shows in 1991 and 1993, and realised that artists were interested in producing artist’s books, Grahame organised the first artists’ book fairs held in Australia in 1994, followed by 1996, 1998, 2001 and 2005.
Grahame says a couple of her favourites are Bea Maddock’s 1990 ‘Artifacts from Tromemanner’ and books by Dieter Roth and Ed Ruscha. “Exhibitions both within Australia and internationally are curated from the collection,” says Grahame. “In 2015 two have been organised: one at the Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery that included Australian and international works, and ‘Une historie du livre d’artiste australien’ will be on show from 10 December, 2015 to 4 March, 2016 at Le Cabinet du livre d’artiste at the Université Rennes in France.”
2016 will see the gallery continue to organise exhibitions and to publish books by gallery artists under the imprint ‘numero uno publications’. Also, a catalogue of the collection is in the process of being uploaded to the gallery website. The collection is open by appointment.
