Tiwi art is distinctly different from other Aboriginal art, even from that of their neighbours in Arnhem Land. Tiwi Islanders practice the art of body painting (Jilamara) for ceremonial purposes and the patterning is primarily decorative with an emphasis on strength of design rather than narrative.
Each artist interprets Jilamara in a unique and distinctive fashion which can be seen in the varied styles represented in this exhibition. Designs can be either organised and uniform shown by cross-hatching and sometimes incorporating fish or birds, or free flowing and gestural using dots or short lines. All artworks have been sourced directly from the Tiwi Arts Communities on Melville Island and include certificates of authentication.
