April 17 to June 14 Jumaadi: the unaccounted sea.
Jumaadi is an Indonesian/Australian artist living in Sydney and Yogyakarta working fluidly across painting, drawing, paper cuts, buffalo hide, performance, animation and installation. Jumaadi’s Indigenous Javanese heritage informs his practice, as well as his personal experiences and the colonial and political histories of his homeland. Recent works and performances have addressed passages of water and those whose journeys depend on it. With a poetic sensibility and symbolism, Jumaadi weaves together personal iconographies of human and organic motifs exploring themes of place, conflict and belonging.

To May 12 MPRG Local Focus: Sundance Studio: Taking a thread for a walk – Flinders-based weaver Emma Shepherd practices one of the world’s oldest crafts with a sensibility of an artist deeply embedded in her environment. Using yarns collected from all around the world, she reflects on the deeper history of fibre, its role in human history and weaving’s legacy as humanity’s earliest algorithms. This exhibition presents a selection of recent works which embed pine needles, horsehair and bark taken from Shepherd’s immediate surrounds, letting them shape the work in a gentle yet deliberate way. Curated by Dunja Rmandic.

To April 13 Ellen Koshland shows a series of interrelated works to launch the Spacecraft exhibition programme. In the main space, large paintings combine word and image to retrace Koshland’s steps to landscapes of First Nations murnong cultivation. A collection of smaller works document the murnong plants themselves using a technique of no-lens photography developed in the 1840s by botanist Anna Atkins. The artworks’ raw materials, landscape photography and typography combine Koshland’s foundational interests in environment and literature while the production values of screen printing and painting are used in tandem to deliver a powerful message.
